What is A Course in Miracles?

When the Course was first published in 1976, it shook people's worlds. Its grand symphony of ideas challenged people to change the way they perceived themselves, others, and reality. The teachings of the Course have been a source of profound transformation in the lives of many thousands of people throughout the world.

The Course is a spiritual thought system that consists of three books: the Text, the Workbook for Students, and the Manual for Teachers. It is a self-study curriculum that uses Christian terminology as symbols but teaches an ecumenical spirituality and states that all paths lead to God in the end.

Throughout the three volumes, the Course offers an explanation of the nature and origins of sin, fear, pain, and death; it explains how the mind can be trained to accept God's love for everyone and return to innocence. It teaches that the greatest miracle is the experience of remembering the truth about yourself, others, and God, which leads to "perfect peace, perfect freedom, and perfect oneness."

A Course in Miracles emphasizes forgiveness as the key to changing your perception and beliefs, and thus your life. Its teachings are based on the principle that the only real problem in the world is the belief in a separation between yourself and another person or a situation, which then results in suffering. The solution is always the same: a change of perspective and a shift of attention to the love that is God and everyone else in the world.

A former journalist, D. PATRICK MILLER has studied A Course in Miracles, the Enneagram system of personality, Jungian depth psychology, and shamanism intensively. He has written extensively about these subjects in print and online, and he is the author of a dozen books. He combines spiritual inspiration and understanding with practical psychological insights in his books, which have received positive reviews from both critics and readers alike. He is also an experienced teacher of the Course.
The Text

In 1965, Columbia University psychologist Helen Schucman began to have a series of inner visions, heightened dreams, and psychic experiences. These led her to decide to seek a way out of the suffering she was experiencing. As she went about this task, she received a three-volume book via a process of inner dictation which began with the phrase “This is a course in miracles, please take notes.” The Course was scribed over the next seven years, and first published in 1976. It has been translated into many languages and continues to be read and studied worldwide.

The Course is not a religion, but it is a spiritual thought system. It uses Christian symbols, but it is ecumenical and takes the form of a self-study curriculum, focusing on experience rather than belief in a theology. It also evokes universal non-dual spiritual themes, including Eastern spirituality.

A key theme of the Course is that love, not fear, is our true nature. It teaches that the greatest miracle is simply to allow ourselves to open to the love that is our natural inheritance. This is accomplished by changing our beliefs and perceptions about reality, moving from the ego’s worldview to the truth. The Course offers a way to do this that is both spiritual and psychological.

Unlike most spiritual teachings, the Course is both profound and practical. The workbook lessons provide a step-by-step approach to applying the principles of the Course to our everyday lives. The daily practice of the Workbook is central to the Course’s message and leads to a shift in the ego’s identity, which allows us to experience the Love that is our true nature.

A Course in Miracles is a powerful and life-transforming spiritual teaching that has touched the hearts and minds of thousands of people all over the world. Its messages and ideas have had a profound impact on the growing number of people who identify themselves as “spiritual but not religious.” To help you understand ACIM more fully, we have created this website to provide helpful resources and tools.
The Workbook

The workbook of A Course in Miracles is an experiential companion to the Text. Its 365 daily meditations offer practical application of the thought system of ACIM. It is designed to be done over the course of one year, and includes a review section at the end of each year.

The Course's spiritual teachings are interwoven with far-reaching and deeply practical psychological insights. Its goal is to help change our beliefs and perceptions — from the ego's story about reality to God's truth. In the process, miracles occur.

Although the Course uses Christian terminology, its metaphysics reflects universal, non-dual spiritual themes that evoke Eastern spirituality. It teaches that all paths lead to the same end: awakening from the dream of separation to remembering God's Love for us all.

Despite its intellectually sophisticated language, the Course is not a religion; it offers no dogma or belief system. It is a self-study spiritual thought system that includes a Text, which presents the concepts of its thought system; a Workbook for Students, with 365 daily lessons to practice the principles taught in the Text; and a Manual for Teachers, adding a variety of topics for advanced study.

While the Course's spiritual inspiration is clear and immediate, its philosophical foundation is profound and extensive. This combination of intellectual and experiential approaches has led some people to compare it to some of the world's great literature.

In addition to a general overview of the course, this book contains a detailed discussion of each of the 58 Lesson Insights from the first-year classes at the Foundation's former location in New York City. These discussions include line-by-line analysis of the lessons, introductions, reviews and summaries. The book also includes two pamphlets, poems and the Epilogue from the Course, and a summary of the Preface. This book is intended to serve as a companion to the textbook, and can be used alongside it in an ACIM class or by individuals working alone at home. Pathways of Light maintains a free service that provides daily Workbook Lesson Insights via email. These are provided to help you deepen your experience of each lesson, and synchronize with the day of the calendar year. To subscribe, click here.
The Manual

The Manual is designed to aid in the teacher/pupil relationship of the Course. It is also meant to help teachers who have become mature enough on their path that they are ready to extend the principles taught in the Course to others. The Manual is primarily concerned with teaching the teacher how to demonstrate forgiveness and healing to others.

The Course is not a religion and it has no formal organization to govern or dictate any beliefs or teachings. It is a system of thought training that seeks to change the way that human consciousness typically works. It does not primarily focus on changing one’s religious beliefs or morals, although it may do so in some cases. Rather, it is a course in awakening to reality and it offers a method for doing so by teaching the principle of forgiveness.

A Course in Miracles is a self-study curriculum that was written by Helen Schucman between 1965 and 1972, according to her claims. She was a research psychologist and claimed that the book was dictated to her, word for word, through a process of inner dictation by an entity she identified as Jesus Christ. After her death in 1981, the Foundation for A Course in Miracles was established and holds the copyright to the book.

One of the reasons that the Course has been so successful is that it attempts to make the spiritual experience accessible to anyone who wants it, regardless of their background or religious beliefs. The book is not particularly religious and does not offer a specific religious practice as such, but it does emphasize that God is Love and that forgiveness is the key to opening up to that reality.

Another aspect of the Course that makes it so popular is its ability to heal physical illness and other problems, as described in the Workbook lessons. The premise is that these physical ailments are caused by a person’s mental and emotional distress and that they can be healed through the application of the Course’s teachings, including forgiveness. The central message is that fear binds the world and that forgiveness releases it.
